4.7 from 141 reviews

Tender and flavorful braised beef short ribs cooked slowly in aromatic beef broth with onions and garlic to create a rich, comforting dish perfect for a hearty meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat

  • 4 pounds beef short ribs

Vegetables & Aromatics

  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced

Liquids

  • 4 cups beef broth

Instructions

  1. Brown the Ribs: Heat a large heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Season the beef short ribs with salt and pepper. Add a small amount of oil to the pot and brown the ribs on all sides until a deep golden color forms, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove the ribs and set aside.
  2. Sauté Aromatics: In the same pot, add the sliced onions and minced garlic. Cook until softened and fragrant, about 5 minutes, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot.
  3. Braise the Ribs: Return the ribs to the pot and pour in the beef broth until the ribs are almost covered. Bring the broth to a gentle simmer. Cover the pot and reduce the heat to low. Let it braise slowly for 3 to 3.5 hours, or until the meat is tender and falling off the bone.
  4. Serve: Once done, remove the ribs carefully and serve hot with the braising liquid and onions spooned over the top, or strain the liquid and reduce it for a richer sauce.

Notes

  • For best flavor, brown the ribs in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan.
  • You can add additional herbs such as thyme or rosemary to the braising liquid for added depth.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes or creamy polenta to soak up the sauce.
  • Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and freeze well for up to 3 months.
