Crust
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Filling
- 1 1/2 cups pecans, chopped
- 3/4 cup pure maple syrup
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- Prepare the crust: In a medium bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the cold, cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press this mixture evenly into the bottom of a greased 9×9 inch baking pan.
- Bake the crust: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the prepared crust for about 15 minutes or until it starts to turn a light golden color. Remove from oven and let it cool slightly.
- Make the filling: In a separate bowl, whisk together the maple syrup, melted butter, eggs, brown sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until fully combined. Stir in the chopped pecans.
- Assemble and bake: Pour the pecan and maple syrup filling over the baked crust, spreading it evenly. Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes, or until the filling is set and slightly puffed.
- Cool and serve: Remove the bars from the oven and allow them to cool completely in the pan. Cut into squares and serve. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature.
Notes
- Use pure maple syrup for the best flavor; avoid pancake syrup substitutes.
- Allow bars to cool fully to ensure clean slicing and optimal texture.
- Chilling the bars after cooling can enhance the firmness and ease of serving.
- Substitute walnuts or almonds for pecans if desired.
- For a gluten-free version, use a gluten-free flour blend in the crust.
