Ingredients

Scale

Cake Layers

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

Chocolate Frosting

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 100g dark chocolate, melted and cooled

Instructions

  1. Prepare Cake Batter: In a large mixing bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In another bowl, beat eggs with sugar until light and fluffy, then add milk, oil, and vanilla extract. Combine wet and dry ingredients until smooth. Slowly add boiling water while mixing to create a thin batter.
  2. Bake Cake Layers: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans. Pour batter evenly into the pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Remove from oven and cool completely on wire racks.
  3. Prepare Frosting: Cream the butter for the frosting until light and fluffy. Gradually add cocoa powder and powdered sugar alternating with heavy cream. Add vanilla extract and melted chocolate to the frosting and beat until smooth and spreadable.
  4. Assemble the Cake: Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous amount of chocolate frosting over the top. Place the second layer evenly on top and cover the entire cake with the remaining frosting. Smooth the top and sides as desired.
  5. Serve: Allow the cake to set for at least 30 minutes before slicing to allow the frosting to firm up. Serve at room temperature and enjoy the rich chocolate flavors.

Notes

  • Ensure the cake layers are completely cool before frosting to prevent melting.
  • Use high-quality cocoa powder and chocolate for the best flavor.
  • For a more intense chocolate flavor, add espresso powder to the cake batter.
  • The cake can be stored covered at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerated for up to a week.
