Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 lb 80/20 ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped fine
  • 1 medium green pepper, chopped fine

Sauces and Seasonings

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp canola oil
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Sauté vegetables: Heat 1 tablespoon of canola oil in a large frying pan over medium-low heat. Add the chopped onion and green pepper and cook for about 5 minutes until they begin to soften.
  2. Prepare to brown beef: Push the sautéed onions and peppers to the outer edge of the pan and increase heat to medium-high.
  3. Brown the ground beef: Spread the ground beef evenly in the center of the pan. Let it cook undisturbed for 5 minutes until it begins to brown.
  4. Cook the beef through: Season with salt and black pepper. Flip the meat over and break it into smaller pieces with a wooden spoon or spatula. Continue cooking for another 2-3 minutes until fully cooked and no longer pink.
  5. Add sauce and meld flavors: Lower the heat to medium-low and stir in ketchup, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and sugar. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the flavors meld together.
  6. Serve: Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto burger buns, brioche buns, or potato rolls and serve warm.

Notes

  • Use 80/20 ground beef for optimal flavor and juiciness.
  • Adjust the level of sugar or mustard according to your taste preference.
  • Serve with pickles or coleslaw for added crunch.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • For a lighter version, use lean ground beef or ground turkey.
