Ingredients

Scale

Artichoke Mixture

  • 1 (14 ounce) can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1/4 cup parmigiano reggiano (parmesan cheese), grated

Bread

  • 1 loaf Italian bread, sliced in half lengthwise (gluten-free bread can be used for a gluten-free option)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Artichoke Mixture: In a bowl, combine the chopped artichoke hearts, sliced green onions, chopped garlic, cream cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream, shredded mozzarella, and grated parmigiano reggiano. Mix thoroughly until the ingredients are well incorporated, reserving some cheese for topping.
  2. Hollow the Bread: Take the sliced halves of the Italian bread and hollow out about half an inch from the center of each half. This creates a cavity to hold the creamy artichoke mixture inside the bread.
  3. Fill the Bread: Spread the prepared artichoke mixture evenly into the hollowed regions of both bread halves. Sprinkle the reserved mozzarella and parmigiano cheese on top of the filling to create a cheesy crust.
  4. Bake Covered: Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Place the filled bread halves on a baking sheet and cover with aluminum foil to prevent excessive browning. Bake for 20 minutes to heat through and meld the flavors.
  5. Finish Baking Uncovered: Remove the foil and continue baking the bread for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese topping is melted, bubbly, and golden brown, and the bread edges are crispy.

  • For added flavor, consider adding a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes or fresh herbs like parsley or basil to the mixture.
  • This appetizer is best served warm, straight from the oven.
