Ingredients

Scale

Chicken Marinade and Filling

  • 2 chicken breasts, finely diced
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil (for marinade)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp minced fresh ginger

Coleslaw

  • 1 (397g) bag coleslaw mix
  • 4 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp honey

For the Wonton Tacos

  • 16 wonton wrappers
  • Cooking spray or olive/canola oil (for brushing)
  • Sweet chili sauce, to serve
  • Chopped cilantro, to serve
  • Sesame seeds, to serve

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Wonton Shells: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly spray the wonton wrappers with cooking spray or brush them with olive or canola oil. Drape the wrappers over the side of a 9×13 inch baking dish and bake for 7-8 minutes, watching carefully to avoid burning. Remove from oven, gently pull apart the wrappers while they are still pliable, then bake for another 7-8 minutes until crispy and golden brown.
  2. Marinate and Cook Chicken: In a large bowl, combine the finely diced chicken breasts with hoisin sauce, 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, soy sauce, minced garlic, and fresh ginger. Heat a large skillet over high heat and sauté the chicken mixture for 7-8 minutes, tossing frequently, until the chicken is fully cooked and caramelized on the edges.
  3. Prepare Coleslaw: In another large bowl, mix the coleslaw bag contents and sliced green onions with 1 tablespoon sesame oil, rice vinegar, soy sauce, and honey. Toss everything until well combined and evenly coated with the dressing.
  4. Assemble the Tacos: Fill each crispy wonton shell with some cooked chicken, then top with a generous spoonful of the coleslaw. Drizzle sweet chili sauce over the top, then sprinkle with chopped cilantro and sesame seeds for a fresh and crunchy finish.
  5. Serve and Enjoy: Arrange the chicken wonton tacos on a platter and serve immediately while the shells remain crisp and the filling is warm and flavorful.

Notes

  • Watch the wonton wrappers carefully in the oven as they can burn quickly once they start crisping.
  • You can prep the coleslaw and chicken mixture ahead of time for quicker assembly.
  • For a spicier kick, add a few drops of sriracha sauce to the sweet chili sauce drizzle.
  • These tacos make a great appetizer or party finger food.
  • Use fresh cilantro and toasted sesame seeds for the best flavor and texture contrast.
